Kamaran - This was more of a tourist excursion than a cultural immersion. Although, navigating the 15 (or so) government road checkpoints to get there, seemed like one. We found ourselves on the coast about to take a boat to Kamaran Island when night fell. But neither night nor the lack of life jackets stopped our Yemeni captain from putting us in a 14-foot dingy and speeding us across the pitch black waves 5 or 6 miles across the Red Sea. It felt like I was a Somali Pirate myself! I learned only moments before arriving to the coast that Kamaran is one of the world’s best snorkeling areas, vibrant with sea life and coral reefs. We didn’t pass it up, nor was our guidebook wrong. Having snorkeled in some fairly exotic places, Kamaran Island put the color in an otherwise fairly monochromatic trip. I wish I had an underwater camera to show you, but try to imagine Finding Nemo in real life. I did actually pinpoint Dori and many other fish from the movie in and amongst the coral. I do apologize for the lack of pictures in this slideshow, I wasn't really focused on taking pictures here.
